In the early stages of my 20% project, I shared that I wanted to learn how to play the song Closer to Fine by The Indigo Girls. Amongst all of my other learning, this has been the most constant work in progress as the weeks have gone by.
While I was traveling with my school last week in New Mexico, I decided to bring along my guitar to practice. Considering there were four of us in our tiny hotel room, I am grateful my roommates for the week did not tire of my practicing.
A friend of mine, who is learning calligraphy for her 20% project, and is also named Alyssa, happens to know this song. Even better, she favors the half of the harmony that I do not sing in performance because it’s higher in my vocal range, I am an Alto II through and through, and really I just like the lower half of the harmony even more. We decided that we would practice together and, as I continue to make my playing better, perfect the duet at the same time so that we could even perform it together.
Below is the video of our very first attempt at playing and singing together. Considering we had never once tried to do it together, I think it’s fantastic! I am looking forward to what happens in a few weeks after we get a chance to practice more.
